Youth Sewing Class Starts

All the girls in the class with their bags of sewing supplies

Yesterday was the kickoff for the youth sewing class. Twelve teenage girls had their first meeting for a sewing class that will be taught by NVM/GAIN staffer Cheryl Warner. In this class they will learn hand stitching as well as sewing with a machine and each girl will make a skirt and a fabric bag.

Aaron and I talking with the girls
Each week before starting the skills portion of the class, a short time of devotion or bible study occurs. Yesterday Aaron and I came to speak about marriage, purity, and choosing a spouse. In this community, marriage and childbirth occurs early... often in the teens. We spoke to them about making good choices that respect themselves and who they are in God. It was a lot of fun and the girls were very excited to get started. I personally have had so much fun helping Cheryl prepare for the class. We made a sample bag for each girl to store her supplies in and are having fun playing around with different styles and designs for future bags. This afternoon we are going to sit down and work with some of our Haitian staff ladies to teach them sewing skills. Definitely something I never thought I would do... but am finding so much fun!
