No Reservations. Anthony Bourdain on Haiti.

Have you ever seen the show "No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain"? Here is the first part of the episode that recently aired on Haiti. The beginning is interesting and shows the distrust and dislike many in the city have for foreign cameras. Then you contrast that with the happy smiley faces were we live and people ALWAYS want their picture taken. Haiti is a land of extremes.

The next part of the video shows the hotel that inspired the Graham Greene book "The Comedians" which I just finished reading this week. Aaron really liked the book. I didn't care for it too much :)

At the 9 minute mark of the video you see what happens in so many cases when foreign ideals are applied to local aid. This is the most real part of this video to me. One we see happen over and over. Ever heard of being sacrificed on the altar of good intentions? See it happen in realtime. Sometimes Helping Hurts.

Overall, this first video gives a pretty good feel for the Haiti we live in...

  1. Hi-
I'm enjoying reading your blog! This post makes me think of a light hearted book you may enjoy "First Comes Love, then comes Maleria" It's the story of a peace corp volunteer and her adventures in LTM.
