Rioting today
Late last night Haiti announced the results of the election. This election has been very controversial with 19 candidates running and allegations of massive fraud. You can read more about the elections and the issues surrounding it HERE. No candidate received a majority of the votes (seems near impossible with 19 candidates running) so there will now be a run off between the top 2 candidates; a woman senator who the majority of the people wanted, and Jude Celeste who is the successor to the current president and has received many allegations of ballot stuffing. In response to the results, many people have taken to the streets in protest. The airport has shut down and tires are burning all over. Rioting is happening outside the palace (which still lay in ruins after the earthquake). We are unable to leave the house today to go to Chambrun and work on our tent. We have word that the roads between here and Chambrun are very unsafe. Tires are burning all over and large rocks are being thrown at cars. Today the second container was supposed to arrive in Chambrun (the one with all the furniture for the house) but that will now be delayed as well until a later date. We feel safe where we are but hope the rioting stops soon. Here are some pictures we took from the place we are staying. You can see the smoke from burning tires near the U.S. Embassy.
