This past week we loaded up two trucks for a trip to the Dominican Republic so all the "blans" could renew their Haitian visas. I still don't understand why we physically have to leave the country every 90 days. It seems that there should be some way to go to the embassy and just pay for a new visa. But anyway- we headed to the D.R. with Pastor Pierre as our guide this time. If you remember from my previous post about our previous D.R. trip... it didn't go well. I am happy to report (mostly thanks to Pastor's presence) that this trip went off without a hitch. It was a nice drive and an easy (and MUCH less crowded) ordeal compared to the last trip. I am so thankful that Pastor could take the time to come with us.
Here we are driving along the lake to the D.R. border. It is really interesting at the border because the lake keeps rising. The building we renewed our visa's in last time on the D.R. side is now partly under water, with fish swimming around the lobby area. In a recent article NASA shares that they have been monitoring the lake's growth via satellite and have seen the lake expand over 22,500 acres in just the past two years!
They just keep adding rock to make the road higher than the rising waters:
An old immigration building under water now:
Aubree reads a book while waiting for exit from Haiti...
The rest of us wait in a corner... some more patiently than others :)
Once in the D.R. we drove to the small border town of Jimani and had a wonderful lunch at a local hotel. Seriously, the food was amazing and there was lots of it!
And the trip back to Haiti was nice and quiet with some sleeping kids!
